When America was first colonized the Buffalos were the lords of the prairie. Once numbering more than 30 million by the 1800's fewer than a two hundred remained, it is from this tattered remnant that people are today trying to rebuild the once mighty buffalo nation. In a surprising comeback today more than 200,000 survive in herds all across the US and Canada. To the native peoples of North America the Bison is a symbol of strength and unity.

Modern bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. They can be more than a dozen feet long and stand up to six feet tall at their massive shoulder hump, which serves as a storehouse for energy-rich fat.
